Past Event - Understanding Oppression: The Intersecting 'isms'

Date/Time:
Thu, Aug 17, 2017 -
8:00 am to 10:00 am

On August 17th the Diversity Forum kicked off a new series on “Confronting the ‘isms’ ”. As we seek to work for social justice, it is crucial to understand what oppression is and how all of the “isms” intersect.

To set the foundation for this new series, we were excited to have Angelique Arroyo, Owner of Angelique Guides: Infrastructures for Conscious Leaders & Collective Healing, who facilitated a very interactive and engaging mini-training on this topic.

She challenged us to not just think about oppression and intersectionality theoretically, but to understand its real-life implications. How do we carry both privilege and oppression in our own lives? How do our various identities intersect? And how can we practically embody our resistance to societal oppression on a day-to-day basis within all of our spheres of influence? Angelique left us with the challenge to do the work that is required to pursue social justice. All of the materials from this session are available below.

Thank you to Amanda Arbour for emceeing, and to HACC for hosting us at their Midtown campus!
