Winter Overnight Shelter:

The YWCA provides a life- saving service to women who are living on the streets during the winter months (December 1 – March 31). We open a room to provide a warm, comfortable and safe place for women to sleep who either can’t or won’t avail themselves of regular homeless programs.

It is a low demand shelter, meaning that as long as behavior is acceptable our guests may enter the YWCA between the hours of 8 pm and 9:30 pm. After a good night’s sleep our guests must leave in the morning by 7 a.m.

This is an unfunded service and relies on volunteers. Volunteers will act as hostesses by welcoming our guests as well as assisting in completing a brief intake and taking attendance. The volunteer will also escort the guests to the sleeping quarters and ensure that they have what they need to be comfortable for the night. By 11 p.m. the volunteer’s job is complete and she may leave.

A brief training will be provided. Please see the training schedule on the Winter Overnight Shelter poster. You may schedule training by contacting Julia Hoskins at 717- 525-6381. You may sign up for the volunteer evening(s) of your choice by following the link provided in the poster.
